Independence from the Pandemic
The painting is about the beauty of vaccination, as it opens Uganda to the breakthrough, unleashing the treasures of tourism that have long been on halt due to the preventive measures taken up by the government of Uganda against the pandemic.
As visible on the top left, a hand (Min of health /Govt of Uganda) is vaccinating the Independence monument. And because of that, just as Gregory Maloba intended in 1962, when he made the monument, the straps wrapping around represent the adversities of the pandemic (poverty, shattered businesses including tourism sector which was first impacted upon by the pandemic). So, the coffin guys as known on social media through a common meme, here take the corona virus as a corpse evacuating the country, as they leave the scene via the bottom, left to symbolise their return to where they came from. On the right we see stylized symbols of some of the key tourism features of the country, such as the silver back Gorillas which are only found in the southwestern part of the country.
The birds which are well known to dwell in the country over 1200 species. Inviting tourists like bird watchers, with the shoe bill being a rare species yet among the array of birds found in the country’s swamp vegetation mainly in Mabamba wetlands.
